Pantanal Headwaters Pact completes two years
SLC Agrícola completed two years as a member of the Pantanal Headwaters Pact in partnership with the NGO WWF Brasil. The Pact’s mission is to protect headwaters in the Cerrado region that run long distances to irrigate the Pantanal plains and to ensure the balance of ecological processes in one of the regions with the greatest diversity of species on the planet. The Pact also aims to help recover 700 kilometers of rivers and at least 30 headwaters in an area through which the Paraguay River and its affluents flow. In the Pantanal region, a total of 1,291 species of plants, birds, fish, mammals, reptiles and amphibians living in the biome were catalogued.
The project involved lectures in local schools across Mato Grosso to raise awareness on the importance of preserving the Pantanal ecosystem. Despite the physical distancing measures during the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 4,000 people participated in the training sessions. The company also held meetings with farmers in 2019 to highlight the importance of recovering headwaters and degraded areas.
“For SLC Agrícola, it is very important to be part of the Pantanal Headwaters Pact, since we are doing our part to preserve the biome and maintain the ecosystem. This program has already helped map the flora and fauna and raise awareness among students and farmers on the healthy use of soil and the importance of environmental preservation,” says Paula Silvério, Environmental and Quality coordinator at SLC Agrícola.
When SLC Agrícola signed the Pact in January 2019, it undertook the challenge of raising awareness and exchanging experiences about environmental education with at least 20 stakeholder groups, including students, rural producers and political agents, among others, in 10 of the 25 cities covered by the Pact, in two years. With this, the company aimed to create a positive impact on these stakeholders and communities in diverse regions across the state in terms of environmental preservation.
In addition to the Pantanal Headwaters Pact, the company also partnered with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) to implement the Cerrado Biodiversity Conservation Project at the Planalto Farm in the city of Costa Rica in Mato Grosso do Sul. Its goal is to promote academic research, as part of doctoral programs, in the legal reserve and permanent preservation areas at the Farm and compare them with the areas in the Emas National Park in Goiás and the Taquari River Springs Park in Mato Grosso do Sul.
