World Environment Day: initiatives reaffirm SLC Agrícola’s commitment to environmental preservation
Environmental conservation and respect for the environment are fundamental pillars for SLC Agrícola and hence the company launched a series of initiatives to reinforce attention to this issue, which is directly related to the sustainable practices adopted by the company at its 22 production units.
An example of this commitment is its joining the CONSERV Program in 2022. The agreement, in effect until 2025, was signed with the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM), is to maintain a native vegetation area in the Perdizes Farm in the state of Mato Grosso.
CONSERV is a program designed to remunerate rural producers operating in the Legal Amazon area, whose properties include native vegetation areas in addition to the reserve area required by the Brazilian Forestry Code. Within the scope of the project, the 1,358-hectare area conserved by SLC Agrícola is the largest individual area to join the mechanism and the first in the Amazon biome.
“Ensuring the balance between our activities and the ecosystem is a pivotal part of our strategy. The agreement with IPAM adds to our efforts to preserve the environment through sustainable practices and the expansion of partnerships aimed at maintaining the ecological balance and building a better future for generations to come,” said Álvaro Dilli, HR and Sustainability Officer at SLC Agrícola.
Developed by IPAM, CONSERV is the result of three years of research and dialogue with rural producers, and is implemented in partnership with the Woodwell Climate Research Center and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Since its launch, the program has already preserved 20,707 hectares of vegetation, stored over 600 tons of carbon and directly impacted 78 producers.
Other environmental initiatives
Environmental protection received a boost in 2021 when SLC Agrícola formalized the Zero Deforestation Policy, which states its commitment to refrain from new conversions of native vegetation areas for production even in the absence of any legal impediment. The policy has been applied in areas across the Amazon biome since 2008 and is now also effective in other biomes. It will be reviewed every two years.
In 2023, the company obtained the Regenagri certificate, an internationally recognized standard that attests to the regenerative agriculture practices adopted in the company’s properties. The certificate was initially granted to the Planalto and Pamplona farms, located in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás, respectively. The strategy now is to obtain the certificate in four other units: Pantanal, Planorte, Palmares and Planeste. “This certificate brings us tremendous pride and shows that we are on the right path, aligning business growth with our planned ESG agenda,” concluded Álvaro.
Last year, the company also signed a partnership agreement with one of its clients for a forest enrichment project on 400 hectares in its areas. The project, currently in progress, has already recovered the first portion of 100 hectares. The reforestation process preferably uses seedlings planted in SLC Agrícola’s own nurseries, in addition to those supplied by third parties.
The company still protects 100% of its own areas spanning over 112,700 hectares, which is the equivalent of 104,351 soccer fields. In all, more than 16,000 seedlings of trees native to the Cerrado region have been planted in 10 of SLC Agrícola’s 22 farms.
