The use of pesticides in Brazil is lower than in several countries in Europe
Brazil ranks 44th in the ranking of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the use of pesticides. According to data from the entity, the relative consumption in the country was 4.31 kilos of pesticides per hectare cultivated in 2016.
Among the European countries that use more pesticides than Brazil are the Netherlands (9.38 kg / ha), Belgium (6.89 kg / ha), Italy (6.66 kg / ha), Montenegro (6.43 kg / ha), Ireland (5.78 kg / ha), Portugal (5.63 kg / ha), Switzerland (5.07 kg / ha) and Slovenia (4.86 kg / ha).
The figures are from the FAOSTAT system, the FAO database that has since 1961 provided statistics on 245 countries regarding food and agriculture. Just below Brazil in the ranking appears Germany, in 47th place, France, in 48th and Spain, in 49th.
Under the criterion of the consumption of pesticides as a function of agricultural production, Brazil appears in 58th place, with use of 0.28 kg of pesticide per ton of agricultural products. In the calculation, the values for the production of grains, fibers, fruits, pulses, roots and nuts and the total consumption of pesticides were used in the FAO statistics portal.
Some of the countries that are above Brazil in this ranking are Portugal (0.66), Italy (0.44), Slovenia (0.36), Spain (0.35), Switzerland (0.34), the Netherlands (0, 29) and Greece (0.30). In 59th place is France, with the use of 0.26 kg of pesticides per ton of agricultural products.
The consumption of pesticides in Brazil is influenced by the occurrence of two or three harvests per year (winter and out of season crops). Because of this, it is necessary to use pesticides for pest control even in the winter and in the out of season crops, because there is no break in the breeding cycle of pests due to the tropical conditions of Brazilian, while in temperate regions the pests are inactive during cold periods.
Quality
According to the president of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, Guilherme Costa, Brazil exports its agricultural products to 160 countries and meets all the quality criteria established by the importers.
"There is a lot of control work being carried out by the private sector as well as very good verification work being carried out by the government to comply with these international legislations, and also to often meet certain requirements of some importing countries that sometimes establish limits that are more stringent than international legislation and our country deals with this in a very professional way and thereby provides the necessary safety to the consumers", says Costa, who is also an agricultural attaché from Brazil to the European Union in Brussels.
The Codex Alimentarius is a joint program of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) established in 1963 to establish international standards in the area of food.
