SLC Group commemorates 75th anniversary
The SLC Group reaches its 75th anniversary having consolidated a long history that symbolizes the strength of Brazilian entrepreneurship and agribusiness, and in 2020 makes its largest investment ever in innovation, technology and connectivity. Founded in 1945, the group is formed by two companies: SLC Agrícola and SLC Máquinas. The former is one of the world’s largest producers of grains and fibers, with production concentrated in cotton, soybeans and corn. With 16 production units in six states, and a headquarters in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, the company is known as a pioneer after having become one of the industry’s first companies to be listed on stock exchanges around the world, making it a reference in its sector. Meanwhile, SLC Máquinas is a John Deere concessionaire with 18 dealerships serving 213 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul that focuses on offering rural producers the latest technology to improve the profitability of their farms. The SLC Group has approximately 4,000 employees and generates annual revenue of over R$3 billion.
“The history of SLC is interconnected with the development of Brazilian agriculture. Over these 75 years, we have walked in step with Brazil’s agricultural producers and brought innovations that have transformed the industry into one of the world’s most technological and productive. We are proud of everything that we have achieved over our long history of more than seven decades. Today, we focus on various fronts, with soybean, corn and cotton farms that set new yield records every year, and with dealership that offer the most advanced agricultural equipment from John Deere to farmers in Rio Grande do Sul, not to mention our seed production. As we reach this milestone of 75 years, our priorities include investments in innovation, technology and connectivity in Brazil,” said Eduardo Logemann, CEO of the SLC Group.
Farms that are technological references
Today, this long history that began in 1945 is advanced every day by over 4,000 people at 16 production units in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia, Maranhão and Piauí, as well as at the headquarters in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. The result of this highly professional management is record-breaking productivity and the role that SLC Agrícola plays in the development and dynamism of Brazil’s agricultural industry.
The main differentials in SLC’s farm management is optimization of costs, efficiency of the operational cycle, full mechanization of all planting and harvesting processes, use of crop rotation system, mastery of direct seeding technique, experience in correcting soil chemistry and seed selection and expertise in technological packaging of inputs, which enables maximum technical efficiency.
In addition, connectivity, which is critical to technological applications in the field, already is a reality at five production units, with the internet signal covering an area of approximately 70,000 hectares. The 4G technological infrastructure also benefits local communities and the suppliers and professionals who circulate in areas near the production units. That is SLC in action developing agriculture, fostering local economies, supporting education and creating possibilities for people to explore a new world. Just like it did in 1945, in the then small town of Horizontina, in Rio Grande do Sul.
“Our business has undergone many transformations. Our dynamic allocation of investments, discipline in mergers and acquisitions, obstinate control of costs and constant efforts to improve productivity have been key factors of our success so far,” said Jorge Luiz Logemann, Vice-CEO of the SLC Group.
SLC Máquinas, bringing technological solutions to producers
With the growth of its business in Brazil, in 1999, John Deere acquired 100% of its assets, and SLC became a concessionaire in Rio Grande do Sul. Today, SLC Máquinas operates 18 dealerships in the state that serve 213 municipalities, with its headquarters in Passo Fundo. The company gives producers in the state access to the technological solutions offered by John Deere equipment, as well as exceptional after-sales and customer service.
At SLC Máquinas, technology is integrated into the company’s daily routine with tools that leverage productivity and orient producers to make better use of their soil and inputs. Digital agriculture enables producers to reduce waste and cut costs. Thanks to the connected equipment, producers obtain operating efficiency gains and are able to make changes that can optimize even more their results, further increasing the efficiency and productivity of their crops.
Social History
The SLC Group’s history always has been intertwined with the stories of the cities that it serves. Another important milestone in 2020 was the founding of the SLC Institute, the social arm of the SLC Group that was created to centralize its social actions. The institute prioritizes actions related to education. However, responding to the recent need to combat the novel coronavirus in Brazil, the SLC Institute’s first initiative was to donate R$1.6 million to healthcare organizations for the acquisition of medical equipment and inputs. The measure benefited 19 cities where the SLC Group operates.
