SLC Agrícola invests in sustainability actions in line with the global agenda
The year of 2019 has been a special year for Sustainability in SLC Agrícola. Since the annual review of its strategic planning in 2018, the company has decided that it would be a time to give more visibility to its actions through more effective communication. This would also explore the major issues affecting the business as well as the major achievements of the "Sustainability Campaign".
The intention is to show the importance of biodiversity in soil health practices, work safety, the importance of water, the management and control of solid waste and liquid effluents and the projects in partnership with various institutions, governments, shareholders and other interested parties in the business of SLC Agrícola. "Above all else, the idea is to highlight how all of this work and how it has impacted the communities", says the director of HR and Sustainability of SLC Agrícola, Álvaro Dilli.
Recently, in a workshop with managers and directors of the company, supported by the consulting firm Ideia Sustentável, the strategic position on sustainability was defined in three axes: soils and climate change, biodiversity and water and the relationship with the interested parties, i.e., the stakeholders. The work also brought to the debate the United Nations (UN) 2030’s world agenda, regarding the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is the agreement among 193 member countries that seek to meet universal needs in five areas: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnerships.
According to Dilli, SLC Agrícola decided to delve deeper into the issues to decide which among the 17 SDGs would be the priorities, and the chosen ones were SDG 8, on decent work and economic growth, SDG 12, on responsible consumption and production, SDG 13, on action against global climate change, SDG 14, on life in water, and SDG 15, on terrestrial life. "It is important to note that for each of the three defined strategic axes, we achieved priority SDGs. We have developed target plans and progress indicators that should be managed and published annually in sustainability reports, reporting on actions and challenges to all interested parties in the SLC Agrícola business”, he notes.
According to the director of HR and Sustainability of SLC Agrícola, the company has evolved over the last ten years in terms of sustainability, with the implementation of the Integrated Management System with three international ISO standards, as well as international certifications such as RTRS for soy, ABR/BCI for cotton, amongst other value-generating initiatives. "More recently, for the second year in a row, we have carried out carbon inventories on our farms for a diagnosis of the impact of climate change on greenhouse gas emissions. We are working on a plan to make our liquid emissions neutral by 2025, contributing directly to reducing global warming in our production activities", he says.
Dilli stresses that, aligned with the UN's 2030 agenda, the challenges of SLC Agrícola strongly adhere to the company's values and Grand Company Dream, which is to positively impact future generations as a world leader in agricultural business efficiency and respect for the planet. "We are proud to belong to a pioneering and ahead of its time modern company, as we definitely put the sustainability theme in the growth strategy against the background of economic, social and environmental balance", he concludes.
