SLC Agrícola and IPAM sign financial compensation contract to conserve 1,300 hectares in Mato Grosso
Committed to mitigating the effects of climate change through conserving ecosystems and biodiversity, SLC Agrícola signed a financial compensation contract to maintain an area of 1,358 hectares of native vegetation at Fazenda Perdizes, in Mato Grosso. This is the largest individual area and the first located in the Amazon biome to join the CONSERV mechanism, conceived by IPAM (Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia) and executed in partnership with EDF (Environmental Defense Fund) and the Woodwell Climate Research Center.
Through CONSERV, a project launched in 2020, rural producers receive compensation for conserving vegetation areas that exceed the reserve required by the Forest Code. SLC Agricola´s adhesion is added to the approval of the Zero Deforestation Policy, last year, which formalizes their commitment not to convert areas with native vegetation for agricultural use, even those eligible in the respective environmental licensing processes. Rational use of natural resources through best practices in cultivation, investments in new technologies and other projects to mitigate environmental impacts is part of the commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 25% by 2030.
Improving productivity is critical to meeting the growing global demand for food without increasing the area planted. "Through investments in innovation, digitalization and adoption of best agricultural practices, we can produce more with less inputs, increasing the efficiency of the production system," said SLC Agrícola's Chief Executive Officer, Aurélio Pavinato.
With SLC Agrícola´s adhesion, CONSERV encourages the conservation of 9,768 hectares in ten rural properties in Mato Grosso. The areas included in the contracts with IPAM are not part of the Legal Reserves or Permanent Preservation Areas (APP) of the properties. "Native vegetation is essential for local, regional and global climate maintenance and is essential to maintain the rain cycle and the predictability of production. To preserve these areas, we must create mechanisms to perpetuate them, including sustainable uses", said IPAM´s Executive Officer André Guimarães.
"SLC Agrícola has grown in recent years, always preserving the environment and respecting all legislation. We have over 118 thousand hectares of preserved areas and this is a very important moment because we want to be an example for future generations", said SLC Agrícola's HR, Sustainability and IT Officer, Álvaro Dilli.
