Planting of the 2021/22 cotton harvest reaches 74% of the estimated area in the country
Planting of the 2021/22 cotton harvest reached 74% of the expected area, according to the weekly report by Associação Brasileira dos Produtores de Algodão [Brazilian Cotton Producers Association] (Abrapa), released at the end of January. Sowing advanced 12 percentage points compared to the previous week.
Six states are implementing fiber crops: Bahia (84%), Goiás (86%), Maranhão (86%), Minas Gerais (85%), Mato Grosso (69%) and São Paulo (90%). In Paraná, Piauí and Mato Grosso do Sul, planting has already been completed.
Abrapa predicts that cotton cultivation in the 2021/22 harvest will reach 1.547 million hectares, which represents an increase of 13.5% compared to the previous one. The estimate is that national production will be 16.5% higher than that harvested in the 2020/21 season.
In addition, the Association also reported that Brazil exported 162,600 tons of cotton in the first three weeks of January, below average when compared to the same period last year.
