Western Bahia reaches 70% of soy harvested despite unfavorable climate
Data collected by Conselho Técnico da Associação de Agricultores e Irrigantes da Bahia [Technical Council of the Association of Farmers and Irrigators of Bahia] (Aiba) indicate that, despite the excess rainfall in the Western region of Bahia between December and February, the oilseed harvest reached 70% of the total cultivated area. The rainfall volume exceeded the 1000 mm mark.
The data collected indicate significant numbers for the season. In 2021, soy productivity in the region reached an average of 67 bags per hectare, making Bahia the national champion of productivity. The current cycle is not far behind, with a forecast of 66 bags per hectare and a total production of 7,048 million tons of grain. The total soy productivity area in the region, which produces 6% of Brazilian soy, is 1.78 million hectares, which represent 66% of the total area cultivated in the Western Bahian crops.
High productivity in light of the unfavorable climate scenario increased the expectations of the Board for the next cycles. "In a year with excessive rain, we can still maintain an average of 66 bags/ha, which leads us to imagine that we have the potential to set new records in years with well distributed rainfall and more abundant levels of solar radiation," explained Aiba's Agribusiness and Projects manager, Luiz Stahlke.
