China releases protocols to import corn and soy meal from Brazil
At a meeting held on Friday (8/5) in Brasilia, representatives from Beijing confirmed with Brazilian rural producers that protocols have been lifted for corn and soy meal from the current harvest. Therefore, the two products can be exported to China later this year. This information comes from the executive director of Associação Brasileira dos Produtores de Milho [Brazilian Corn Producers Association] (Abramilho), Glauber Silveira, who participated in the meeting as a representative of the entity.
The meeting was convened by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) to update the productive sector on negotiations to start corn shipments to China. Silveira pointed out that the new strategy defined by China was already expected and said that allowing imports will make shipments of the current harvest easier, since MAPA would not be able to validate the protocols currently imposed.
According to the protocol agreed on with Beijing, the Brazilian government would have to provide guidance to the productive sector to monitor the pests that concern China, but this is not possible for this harvest, which has already been harvested.
According to Silveira, the Chinese government informed the Brazilian government that it would be releasing it from compliance with the protocol's rules this harvest, but that they will have to be complied with starting in 2023. "The reality is that this opens up a new and very important market for Brazilian corn”, concluded the director of Abramilho.
