SLC Agricola farm hosts delegates of the global event, the Youth Ag Summit 2019
Have you ever considered how to end world hunger? The objective of the Youth Ag Summit, which took place in Latin America for the first time in 2019, is to get people thinking about sustainable agriculture and the future of the planet. SLC Agricola’s Pamplona Farm in Cristalina (Goiás) was one of the places chosen for the activities to take place at. On the morning of November 5th, one hundred young people, between 18 and 25 years old, from 45 countries, arrived at the farm for the presentation of case studies from the grain and fiber producer on soil health, research and digital agriculture, biodiversity and water management. The Youth Ag Summit is part of Bayer’s global program on agricultural education.
For the manager of Pamplona Farm, Marcelo Peglow, it was highly satisfying to be part of Bayer’s program, helping to validate the company’s project goals. “We are really happy to have been chosen to host this event. Our experts showed how a farm can continue to achieve good results in terms of productivity, but coupled with sustainable practices, which fits our Big Dream to positively impact future generations”, he explained.
“Brazil is one of the most important agricultural producers in the world. These young leaders had the opportunity to see, up close, real sustainability in action in Brazilian food production. For us, at Bayer, it is very satisfying to be able to use our partnership with SLC Agricola to show the agricultural potential of Brazil”, confirmed Rodrigo Santos, president of Bayer’s Crop Science division for Latin America.
The Forum in Brasilia (Federal District) and Cristalina (Goiás) lasted three days - November 4th-6th, 2019. To be involved the young people had to take part in a global selection process, where they had to present a project, answering the question: how to feed a hungry planet? There were 12 Brazilians, among the world-wide delegation, representing the country at this global youth summit. During the event, the delegates, as well as being given inspirational lectures and mentoring, developed projects which were assessed by a jury on the last day of the event. Three projects chosen by the jury were then given specialized support, so that they could be put into practice.
The initiative is part of Bayer’s Agricultural Education Program, which brings young leaders together to discuss and create solutions to meet the challenges of feeding a growing population by 2050. The approach is to defend sustainable agriculture and food safety, and work to bridge the gap in the understanding between those who produce food and those who consume it. The previous summits were held in Canada, Australia and Belgium.
