Increase in the cotton area is reflected in the harvest
The early sowing of cotton in Mato Grosso, added to the attractive price of the lint, encouraged cotton farmers to invest in more areas for the cultivation of fiber. Thus, the area was projected at 1.18 million hectares, 5.23% higher than the last estimate. The average productivity in the state was estimated at 278.55/ha, 4.25% lower than the last report. However, the expected production for the cycle becomes 4.91 million tons.
According to data from the Mato Grosso Institute for Agricultural Economics (IMEA), this scenario of decreased yields in the monthly comparison was the result of lack of rainfall between April and May this year, in addition to the impacts of frosts that affected some crops in the state.
With this scenario, even with the drop in yields in the state, Mato Grosso production showed reflections of the increase in area estimates, with an increase of 5.23% when compared to the harvest report 2021/2022.
