SLC Agrícola is responsible for more than 87% of RTRS certified corn in the world
SLC Agrícola was recognized this month as one of the world's largest producers of RTRS (Round Table On Responsible Soy) certified corn. The company achieved certification after audits carried out between August and November, along with six other producers (five from Argentina and one from Uruguay). SLC Agrícola is responsible for 489,827 tons (more than 87%) of the total of 561,831 certified tons. In planted area, the company accounts for 76,274 hectares out of a total of 86,414 certified.
The RTRS Corn Standard was released in December 2021. Most of the sustainability requirements set out in the RTRS Standard for Responsible Soy Production are applicable to corn, so RTRS has decided to move forward in integrating a soy/corn certification system. In a statement, RTRS, which did the certification, states that "the first experiences in RTRS Corn certification demonstrate how it is possible to capitalize on the positive sustainability results achieved by certifying soy and to continue the sustainable production process by extending this certification to a rotation crop.
According to Álvaro Dilli, HR, Sustainability and IT Director at SLC Agrícola, the main reasons that drove corn certification were the possibility of supplying the domestic market and the company's greater capacity to meet the requirements of foreign customers. "For the company, it was also an opportunity to extend our scope of certification to other commodities and to take advantage of the synergy between the two products, soy and corn, at the time of the audit," he said.
