Favorable weather and increased planted area may cause growth in corn production in the 2021/22 harvest
Considering the possibility of early harvest in January for soy, Agriconsult estimates that Brazil may start planting the second corn harvest within a more favorable climate window for cereal productivity. The corn harvest is the largest in the country and sowing begins after the soy harvest is removed from the fields.
With this scenario, Agriconsult estimated a total of 124 million tons of corn produced in the 2021/22 harvest, with 28.7 million tons in the first harvest and 95.3 million tons in the second. The projected numbers represent a growth of 44.5% compared to the previous harvest as its productivity was harmed by climatic factors such as drought and frost. In this scenario, the export estimate may show a total much higher than last year: 45.2 million tons in 21/22 compared to 18.6 million in 20/21.
In the overall picture, it is favorable for a possible 5.6% expansion of the planted area, which could reach 20.8 million hectares. If the data materialize, Brazil will once again be the second largest corn exporter, second only to the United States.
