Corn shipment abroad at the Paranaguá Port in the first half of 2022 is 221% larger than in the same period in 2021
The amount of corn shipped abroad via the Paranaguá Port in the first half of this year increased by 221% compared to the amount shipped in the first half of last year. Between January and June this year, a total of 1.9 million tons of grain were shipped, compared to 591,538 tons from January to June 2021. In June alone, the exported volume reached 354,424 tons, after two years with no record of grain shipments this month at the terminal, Portos do Paraná confirmed.
Also according to Portos do Paraná, these exported volumes of corn are not even from the new harvest, which is currently being harvested in the Central-South region, but from inventory. "The need, however, to make room to receive the new harvest is not the only explanation for this increase (of external shipments)", says the company, adding that, according to corn operators in Paranaguá, the war in Ukraine "also boosted shipments, especially in recent months".
Without being able to comply with export contracts for Ukrainian corn, importers had to resort to other sources, such as Brazil, which still had inventory and good price margins.
The states of Paraná, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul are the main origins of corn shipped by the Ports of Paraná. Egypt, Iran, Spain, South Korea and Portugal are the main destinations of the product exported by the port in Paraná.
